Employee Spotlight: Meet Shannon P.

Celebrating 30 years of being in service to members, providers and employees is exciting.  We are celebrating the occasion by asking a few questions that tie together our past, present and future through our employees’ voices.  Keep reading to read about Policy Analyst Shannon P., who is buckling in for the ride into Neighborhood’s future!

How long have you worked at Neighborhood? What is your position, and what do you enjoy most about your position?
It has been a little over a year since I joined Neighborhood as a Policy Analyst for Government Affairs. In this role, I am responsible for monitoring, evaluating, and advising on local, State, and Federal legislation and regulations. It is important for me to understand all the ins and outs of this topic so I can best assist my colleagues when legislation or regulations impacting the organization arise. My role is unique because I have the pleasure of getting to know many colleagues due to the nature of my work. It is truly what I enjoy most about my role.

What did you do before joining Neighborhood? Did any position or experience prepare you for current position, and why?
Over 80 percent of my career has been focused on the healthcare sector. While not on the ground in communities, my first role as a Healthcare Group Purchasing Coordinator was designed to serve as a cost savings conduit for hospitals across the United States from Maine to Louisiana. It was in this role where I started to understand the healthcare system and how individuals, families, and communities operate within and in conjunction with the healthcare system.

From dental insurance to Pharmacy Benefit Management, and both Flu and Covid Vaccine project management, to name a few, the skills and knowledge I have received from on-the-job roles have been insightful and critical to my work at Neighborhood. My varied experiences across healthcare have given me a unique perspective when facing on challenges and creating process improvements.

The Government Affairs’ space is one that has allowed me to take all the healthcare knowledge I have gained throughout the years and apply it in a meaningful way for Rhode Islanders. Healthcare is complicated and the landscape is continuously changing. Advocacy is essential and I am here to support Neighborhood’s mission of providing high-quality, affordable healthcare to the residents of Rhode Island – a mission it has had for 30 years.

Are there any projects or committees you were involved in at Neighborhood that stand out to you?
About three months into joining Neighborhood, I sat in the first Employee Experience (EX) Workgroup meeting. One month after that I was elected as one of two Co-Chairs, the other being my colleague, Dan Shea. Last month we celebrated our one-year anniversary of the workgroup. The trust, collaboration, and open and honest communication that happens not only within the workgroup but across the company is refreshing and honestly inspiring. The positivity expands outward as we interact with members, partners, and even our own families. I am so proud of all the work the group has done and will continue to do.

Where did you grow up?
I was born and raised in Rhode Island. My younger years were spent in Central Falls where my mom and I lived with my grandmother before moving to Cumberland when I was in second grade.

Are there special childhood, teenage years, adult years, or family memories?
Moving from Central Falls to Cumberland at six-or seven-years-old was a huge transition for me. What I remember most was how the kindness of one little girl, who later became my best friend, made all the difference to me in that extremely uncertain time.

Is there a person or experience that inspired you to pursue a certain path?
While my mom is not in the healthcare field, she always has been an inspiration. She was a single mom until I was in high school, so her perseverance, dedication, and drive have pushed me to never settle for anything less than what I am seeking. When I found myself unexpectantly a single mom, I was determined to be as good of a role model for my own children as she was for me. I was able to continue my bachelor’s degree thanks to her support. Her encouragement has meant the world to me. I am forever grateful to have had such a strong role model in my life.

How do you enjoy spending time outside of work?
My husband and I are, what some may call, “Disney fanatics.” We love to go to Walt Disney World any chance we can get, either with or without the kids. Getting to all the parks around the world is a goal we both have. When I am not planning our next trip to Disney, you can find me with my family, walking, hiking, or doing yoga. I also am a huge fan of natural disaster movies, all kinds of music, finding new restaurants to try, and our two dogs!

Can you share a fun fact that others might find surprising/interesting about you?
A fun fact about me is that I once owned a dance studio. Growing up I was a company member of the State Ballet of Rhode Island and performed in community theater as well. While I was always passionate about performing, I truly appreciated being able to share the love of the arts as an educator.

Is there any advice or mantra that you would share with someone interested in this work, or mission?
Always bring your authentic self to everything you do. I am a big Brene Brown fan, and I love this quote by her, “Authenticity is the daily practice of letting go of who we think we’re supposed to be and embracing who we are. Choosing authenticity means cultivating the courage to be imperfect.”

What is your fondest memory of or about Neighborhood?
While I have only been at Neighborhood for a little while, I have already had so many fond memories. It is hard to choose just one, but I would say my very first ALS Soak last July. The energy from everyone who participated was unlike anything I had ever experienced. It was such a heartfelt experience for an important and amazing cause.

What do you personally like most about Neighborhood?
Hands down the people. We lift each other up and are truly united around Neighborhood’s mission.

What has you excited about Neighborhood’s future?
Infinite possibilities! There is so much talent, passion, and innovation within the company I know there is so much more to come. I am so honored to be a part of it; and am buckling up for the ride (like Guardians of the Galaxy!)
