Neighborhood Takes an Important Step to Help Beat Diabetes

Neighborhood is proud to help sponsor America's Walk for Diabetes, a 2 or 3 ½ mile walk-a-thon to be held on October 21, 2006, in Newport, RI. The walk, which will start at Salve Regina College, will help the American Diabetes Association raise funds and awareness for diabetes research, advocacy, and education. Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin, a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. It is estimated that approximately 750 Neighborhood members have diabetes, a disease which largely affects Hispanics and African Americans. Be sure to stop by the Neighborhood booth at the event’s Health and Fitness festival. For more information, please call 1-800-DIABETES or visit to www.diabetes.org/walk.
